wild horses

This is just how a 5-year-old thinks:

Carpenter yells from upstairs “Where’s the diapers?” And I think, oh crap, I forgot to pick them up on the way home. I knew we were on our last one or two. I yell upstairs “we’re out! Give her a bath! I’ll be right back!” (Code for: STALL! STALL! I NEED TO BUY MORE.”) I put on a sweater and dash for my keys.

I see Helena in the dining room with her notebook and purple pen. I just got her the notebook since they’re practicing writing in school, and she is so into it. I’m delighted: she’s not really been excited about reading or writing until the last couple of months, maybe even couple of weeks, and now she’s at her notebook writing “THE HE HELENA THE TO AS” over and over. So awesome.

I (kind-of-kiddingly) say to her as I’m running out the door “Hey babe, you need anything from Rite Aid?”

And she says “Uh, yeah.” (Whaa? I stop short and look over at her.)

“Um, remember my horses? I’ve been missing the one that stands up, like this? [Performs rearing horse motion.] So can ya pick me up one of those standing horses?”

(My friend asked me “at this point did you explain ‘needs’ versus ‘wants’?”

And I just said to him, “no, I just told her ‘I’ll see what I can do.'”)

I mean, what do you say to a request for a rearing horse from Rite Aid?

Um, they stand up? Like this?

What a sweet story!! You have to wonder how long that missing horse has been on her mind, her just waiting for the opportunity to bring it up. So, why’d ya leave us haning? Did you find one?
