to get to the other side

by humanmama on November 15, 2011

Someone who lives in Tokyo messaged me, and she said “you have lifted my spirits as a fellow mama.” It made me so happy. But it made me think, “Oh, okay. So does that mean I have to keep writing? Because I was just about to quit.”

No, I wasn’t really. Although it gets tough to juggle, writing here is my passion, and my therapy. I get to pour out things here to you all that, um, well, I was about to say “that I wouldn’t say elsewhere.” But if you know me, you’d know I would say most things elsewhere. It’s just that I know you love me, and care about me, and I love you too, all of you. I get to say things here that mothers and fathers (and other adults, too) can say “YES! AMEN!” to and not feel judged, or insulted, just listened to. And supported.

So here I am, writing again. Hoping you’ll listen, and feel a part. Hoping those things “they don’t tell you” when you have kids will be things that you do tell other people, maybe even here, and things that you will share. And laugh about. Because we all need a laugh, right?

I know I do. Here’s one:

I put my kids to bed in the same room this week. I’ve done it a few times so far. As you can guess, they spend about 2 hours thinking of ways to disturb each other and get out of bed.

So when Helena was sitting on the potty for the 3rd time tonight, we were talking about family. I told her her a grandma is a mom’s mom. She said “And one day? You’ll be so old.” I said, “Yes. I will be.”

“But I won’t call you old.”
“No? What will you say?”
“I’ll just tell you a joke, like, ‘Mom, why did the old cross the road?'”

Yep, you need to laugh. Or else you’ll be the old, crossing the road. Sooner than you think.
