third time’s the charm

by humanmama on March 21, 2012

I don’t know about you, but I’m not complaining one little bit about this weather. This is unheard-of for March, and even more so for February, when all the 60+-degrees began. I love it. I loooove it.

Things here are good. I’m getting ever closer to the time when we introduce a baby into this home, once again, and it’s going to be our third. A lot of friends and acquaintances have an opinion about the third child. They can range from this:

“After two, you’re outnumbered anyway! Just don’t worry!”

To this:

“What the hell are you thinking?”

The nice thing about this is that I am the woman, and the pregnant woman at that, so mostly I get the former comment. A lot of people say “Oh, three’s a game-changer,” but it’s usually with a toss of the head back to their own three children, and a smile, and a laugh. Carpenter, being the man I guess and therefore subjected to more harsh criticism of who he gets pregnant, has heard a lot more of the latter comment. Friends, co-workers, enemies–everyone seems comfortable saying things to Carpenter like “Ha! You’ll be sorry! Three is insane.”

Um, come on! Someone give him a break. At the moment he is a little tougher-skinned than pregnant me, that’s true, but can’t you be a little encouraging? He usually just laughs and rolls his eyes, but I’m definitely the one yelling “WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT?!” to the offending party. I’m not sure where that sentiment comes from–the thought that you should definitely warn the man that he is done for when the third child comes about.

I’m pretty sure they all love having three, and just don’t want us to know how great it is, in case it spreads and everyone starts having three.

Three is great! Yes, a little busier, a little crazier, but fun too. Like any member of the family, they come with blessings and work. You all can handle it!

Mama, I just had my third (five weeks old tomorrow) and let me tell you (from all of my five weeks of experience): Three is The Best. You’re not as nervous as you were with your first, and you don’t have that I’ve-Ruined-My-First-Born’s-Life! like you had with your second. You’re just experienced enough to be confident and you KNOW that, even though this means a bit more juggling, they’re all going to be just fine–better for it, actually! And you’ve heard the rumors about third babies, right? That they’re the easy ones? Those rumors are RIGHT. This baby girl is the first of my three to sleep! And to see the two Bigs next to the tiny Little? Priceless. Enjoy every minute!
