the baby jesus

We’re not totally religious. You might know that since I wrote about God here before. But we do believe. We do act accordingly. We do unto others as we would like done to ourselves over at my house, and we also get out the Nativity Set that Aunt Dorothy made us when we got married, every year.

This year was special. As I get our Christmas ornaments down, (painstakingly tripping over the “girls clothes 0-6months” boxes that litter the attic floor, down the steep ladder, past Scrooge McCarpenter who is muttering something that sounds like:

“muttermutterChristmasmutterstupidmuttertoomuchtodomuttermutter”

and then down the main floor, I often wonder if it’s all worth it. Then I see the delight, the absolute sheer joy on the children’s faces, and I know it is worth it. They open the boxes, they put up the stockings, they want the Christmas tree RIGHT NOW MOMMY! And we open the Nativity set, get out the cute little wooden painted people and set them up to be clustered just so around the manger, expectantly looking in.

And then it began.

"My Children are Fighting/The Poor Baby Wakes, But Little Lord Jesus No Crying He Makes?"

“NO, I GET THE BABY JESUS!!” [SCREAM]

“NO LENA GIMME BABYGEEBUS!” [SCREAM] [Distinct sound of something being hit with a blunt object]

“AAAHHHAHAHA!” [Wailing, gnashing of teeth, rending of clothes] “MOMMMM! BOO HOO HOO SHE HIT ME!”

“WAAAAH LENA HIT ME WIFF BABYGEBUS AND I WANNED HOWD BABY GEEBUS!”

Yes, friends. ‘Tis the season. Not sure even Mary herself could have foreseen my children, ages in the future, fighting over her baby’s action figure.

(p.s. the photo at right is a coloring page. I assure you: Jesus had waaay darker skin than that.)

As you know my little ones, you can be rest assured that we too have had daily fights over our own Little People baby Jesus (and for whatever reason the black sheep and donkey??)
