thank God it’s Friday

There are so many things that happen that we can’t control in life. I know a hundred, maybe a thousand, people who have given birth to healthy babies. Babies who have lived, thrived, grown, and begun growing up.

I know two women who have had babies die after they were born. I know two women who had healthy children who, impossibly, got cancer, and both of whom died. And I know two women who have had to give born to babies who they knew were stillborn.

o bla di, o bla dah

There are a lot of things that can happen. Sometimes it’s a miracle we can get through the days whole, and okay, knowing that there is so much scary badness out there in the world. But we try. We have to. Something that helps is ignorance: my sister used to have horrible anxiety all the time about things she wasn’t doing to help the world. All the suffering, all the hatred, all the violence and here she was, mostly powerless against the big stuff. Someone told her to stop listening to so much public radio. And although we all laughed, it was true: sometimes not knowing is better. It’s okay to just help the people you can help and not fill your mind with the rest. It’s okay to take a few years off of charitable giving in order to buy groceries for your family while you’re broke and the kids are young. It’s okay to only do what you can do–and not do everything.

If ignorance isn’t working, and worry and fear are still banging down your door, there are more things that can help. Letting yourself open up in counseling–some of the world’s most amazing people make it work. And getting in touch with spirituality can help you–any kind, no judgement here. Prayer and meditation are tools to a more whole you.

But really? In the end, we only have each other. It’s true everyone’s telling you to ENJOY YOUR LIFE and live it to the fullest now, and you’re thinking really, a-holes?! I’m broke, or tired, or stressed. Maybe sick. Maybe dying. But there is still something to live for each and every day. You have me, and you have us all, to band together, saying we can get through this, whatever it is. You have nature, and infinite beauty, and March and April and Spring and great new things happening. You have opened your eyes again today, and today shall be great.

So take heart, you healthy people. And also, you dying people. Tomorrow’s Friday. Let’s celebrate.

well said. Every second is a gift, and an ever fleeting one at that.
