sugar cafe!

I went to the most wonderful little place for my birthday breakfast (yes, it was sans-kids), and I think you should know about it.

The place is called the Sugar Cafe, and if you’re in Pittsburgh, if you’re in the South Hills, you should go there. It’s an absolute tribute to the fact that the East End isn’t the only up-and-coming part of the ‘Burgh. (No offense. But seriously, where’s our Trader Joe’s?!)

Helena's already bitten the ears off this bunny

The Sugar cafe is a little sweet spot on Potomac in downtown Dormont, and it offers so much more than a little somethin’ sweet for your sweetie. (Although when I was eating the remnants of Lilly’s sugar cookie, I thought, this is awesome.) There are frittatas and waffles (so good!) for breakfast, exquisite salads for lunch, and sandwiches like the Black Forest Ham on French Baguette (um–there’s apples and gouda in there. Amazing). They’re open ’til 7 except for Sunday, and they open at 7am weekdays so you can take your kids there after they wake you up screaming “I POOP MAMA” at 6:30am.

One of the coolest things for parents is that it’s not frowned-upon to bring your kiddos. In fact, starting this week, there’s a 10:30am Monday “story time,” where you can bring the kids and they can snack and listen. And hopefully you can get a little coffee and “me time” in there. Well, okay, at least listen to Curious George instead of reading it, for a change.

mmm, stories and cookies!

While I was there, I met Jessica, mother of twins and wife of Toast! restaurant/wine bar owner (2009’s Best New Restaurant). She agreed that the Sugar Cafe was an awesome move for Dormont, a move in the right direction. And that she hoped no one opened the door again until she left so her 2-and1/2-year-old twins wouldn’t run out onto the sidewalk. Ah, motherhood.

If you see Tara (manager) or Kelly (owner), tell them AJ sent you! Maybe I’ll get a free sugar cookie (the best I’ve ever had).

Yay, Sugar Cafe! Come to Pittsburgh and you can go there with us. But beware: you might not want to leave.

(If you missed it, Kelly the owner is also a mommy, and lives in Mt. Lebo. She was featured in MtL, Mount Lebanon’s magazine, in April. Page 10!)
