I have two daughters, ages 5 and 2. And when we got the ultrasound to see which gender this next kid would be, we brought the kids along. It was 7:30am, which meant they had been up for a while, but we usually don’t do much until 8 or 9, so they were pretty calm and quiet–at least, quieter than they are at, say, noon.

We waited while the ultrasound technician lubed up my belly with warmed-up gel. (In a related story, Lilly, age 2, had been calling me “Jelly Belly” ever since. Not what a woman likes to hear, to be sure.) She began the process of detailing heart, lungs, femur length and the like, and finally said, “So, do you wanna know the gender?” We said we did, and she switched views.

“I knew it!” said the tech.

“Another girl, right?” I smiled knowingly.

“No! I usually think ‘girl’ if someone comes in with two already, but for some reason I thought this one was a boy.”

[Second for sinking in.] “Um, it’s a boy??” I say, surprised, “are you sure?” And she points to the screen. I won’t go into detail as I’m sure my future son wouldn’t like this spread over the internet, but let’s just say there was no doubt. It was a boy. Even I could see in the murky, underwater aura which is an ultrasound.

Helena says to the technician “Dad and I had no idea! How do you know?” And I said, “Honey, what do boys have that girls do not have?” She knows the answer to this. But her younger sister thinks she does too. And with all her heart, little sister, age 2 and 1/2, yells to the technician,

“DOES HE HAVE A PEANUT??!”

And that, my friends, is what I’m secretly calling baby #3. My little peanut.

Hope he doesn’t mind.

Well, as long as no one tells him the origins…maybe a while? :)
