it’s a family affair

"I'm peeeepeeeingggg..."

Lillian, age (almost) 2 and 1/2, asks to go potty each and every single night when I’m about to put her into bed. Sometimes she yells “I’M PEE-PEEING” at the top of her lungs after I put her down, but often she just freaks as I’m putting her into bed and says “I gotta go potty! I’m peeping! I’m pooping!”

Don’t think I’m dumb. I totally know she’s stalling bedtime. But still, almost all the time she actually does go potty. So, what can you do? If she was just using a diaper it would be a little easier to ignore, but she is potty-trained now, in the day, and although she often wakes up with a wet diaper, she hardly ever has a daytime accident. So I sit downstairs and worry, thinking, but what if she has to go for real?

Last night when I put her to bed, she said it again. “I Gotta Go POTTY!” I said, oy, okay. She didn’t really go when I put her on  earlier, so, yeah.

She sat on the potty for 10 minutes. It was like an eternity. Every time I said “are you done now?” she crossed her arms very seriously and with her 2-year-old lisp said “No, I’m shtill going.” Finally I said, “Lilly, look, you’re done now. You pooped some little poops.” She looked down and saw three tiny little poops in the toilet.

She looked up and said “They need their mommy.”

5 minutes later, after I excused myself to laugh silently outside of the bathroom, I came back in. She was straining. “Uhrrgh.” I, in all seriousness,  said “are you still pooping the mom?” and she said,

“No, thish one’s the dad.”

This is fabulous! I just read it to my partner and we laughed out loud–it is even better shared.

(PS, I’ve been reading your blog since you posted it on the reunion fb page. I consider this your job, in addition to staying home with your girls, and you’re doing it really well. So, you know, when you feel like you should be “working”, please don’t linger there long.)

thank you!! It’s good to be appreciated! And, also, poop stories demand to be told :)
