for electronic ponies and auld lang syne

by humanmama on December 31, 2012

Well, it’s been a week. A good week, and a hard week, and that’s pretty much describing this year, too, and this life, too. As good as you make it, as usual, and I think in general we’ve made it pretty good over here. People are good to me, and I’ll take a cup of kindness yet. I hope I’m good to people. And I hope things with you are good, too.

You might have read the one about the missing Christmas gift that my daughter was so, so miserable about. Well, we didn’t get it for her. I did not open a home-equity line of credit to get a $120 electronic pony that whinnies and eats a fake carrot. And although I was momentarily researching new credit card APRs in order to get it off of Amazon, I didn’t. And she’s okay. And now an even better thing has happened: she is really motivated to make money to save up for the horse. To the tune of doing chores for dimes. So, it turns out, not getting her what she wanted is actually turning into an awesome learning and growing experience. Oh, Santa, you clever bastard.

I have done a lot this year, and I’m sure you have too. Where were you at the beginning of last year? Broker? More out of shape? Were you in a situation you needed to get out of? A job that was a poor fit for you? Some of us were (ahem) hugely pregnant, and have resolved that. And some of us were just simply trying to get through the year alive. Well, guess what? You made it! The year is over and here you are: still alive. Still intact. And probably, since I know you, probably a little bit better.

So happy new year! Here’s to growing better this year than ever before. Happy 2013!!

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll buy your pint-stowp!
and surely I’ll buy mine!
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
