-cough, cough-, sigh.

I’ve been sick this week. That’s one difference between staying at home and working outside. If I worked outside, I’d pretend I was going to work, drop the kids off, and COME BACK HERE, kick off my heels, and go to bed when I feel like this. But no, I don’t have any day care set up. Just the kindness of friends. And the TV.

It’s horrible being sick. A fever is what does me in. When I have a fever and I feel like crawling onto the couch and turning on DIY channel and sleeping all day, and I’m hurting all over and just barely holding it together, what I really need is:

Kids to crawl on me. Kids to ask me what’s wrong. Kids to say “Mommmyyyy, I need you wipe my bummmmyy!” I need kids to ask for things (“I’m huuunnnngryyyy!” “But you just ate.” “But I’m hungryyyy agaiiinnnn! [eye towards Halloween candy]”), and I need kids to fight. A lot. About anything, really. “She took my bear!” “She pinched me on the throat!” “She has the green crayon… THE SAME GREEN CRAYON THAT I WAS GOING TO JUST GET.”

Because kids? Yeah, kids make you feel better.

Actually, now that my fever is gone, it’s not so bad. It’s kind of cute. Last night I was in bed and Carpenter was putting them to bed, and Lilly, who is now 2 and a half, thankyouverymuch, crawled into bed with me. “Mommy,” she whispered. “Mommy? You head feeling bedder?”

“Mommy’s just not feeling good today, Lills. I have a bad headache.”

“OH! Okay, I go get you a rice bag? [Rice bag = ice pack. Runs down the hall, down the steps, sound of freezer opening downstairs. Brings back cup of ice.] “Mommy? I not find a rice bag I bought you some ice.”

“Oh, thanks honey. Go tell Daddy that you need to go potty and brush your teeth before bed.”

“Okay mommy. Mommy? I hope-a you feel bedder. I lothes you mommy.” [Not “loathe”–love + lisp = lothes.]

I love you, too, baby. And yes, you are making me feel bedder.

As long as daddy’s putting you to bed.
