birthday letters

by humanmama on May 23, 2011

This is a good idea, and I’m not sure if I originally thought it up on my own or if I heard it. Either way, I’m now claiming it as my own.

My oldest is about to turn five. And even though she really wants a fish, each of the children gets a letter for her birthday. I write it sometime on or a little after the day, or even months later, but I title them “Helena’s 2 years old” or whatever and print them out and save them. For when they are old enough to actually want them.

Maybe I should hand-write them. But then they couldn’t read them in 50 years when handwriting is a lost art, like cave drawings or hieroglyphics.

The hope is that when, in 18 or 19 years (hopefully not less) or whenever they realize I’m totally nuts, they can look back on those letters and realize that I was once a functional and really amazing mother. That or realize they actually made me crazy. Then they’ll feel bad and let me live with them. At least, that’s the hope! :)

Or at least they can keep in mind that no matter how nuts I get, I really truly cherish them and am so proud of them and each little accomplishment. From walking to driving, from getting their first friend to finding that life-long partner. And I cherish them despite the times I yell, or say dumb things. Or just respond to what’s going on inside me, and not what’s right for the situation.

So happy birthday my loves, and here’s a little piece of myself. I’ve given you many, and I’ll give you more. But here’s a little piece you can freeze in time and take with you. And that might be the best birthday gift I can give you.

That and a fish.

Great tradition! I do a 1-sentence journal most nights for my boys and I do handwrite them. Lord knows if they will EVER be able to read them!
