act now!

by humanmama on November 29, 2011

Part of the thing that always sucks the fun out of the holidays for everyone is the commercialism. I hear it all the time. I see it all the time. BLACK FRIDAY! CYBER MONDAY! LIMITED TIME OFFER! ACT NOW!

You know, you don’t have to act now.

You can beat the commercialism. I know you can. You can make the holidays about juuust what you like. Because this is America! Land of the free! And if you hate commercialism, do something about it. Volunteer at a soup kitchen. Make all your presents this Christmas. Give more. Take less. And if you still hate the commercial-y feeling of Christmas? Well, then, don’t buy anything for anyone this year, Scrooge.

Just kidding! You couldn’t do that. Because then you’d be looking at your kids, or grandkids, or nieces or nephews, or somebody somewhere in your life who is handing you a gift, and you’d be saying to yourself “Oh CRAP, I didn’t get them anything at all.” And it’s because Christmas and this lovely time of year is about giving. And it’s okay if it’s only about giving a paper ornament with glitter on it. Or howsabout a really nice letter? It’s just the thought that counts, and if your family doesn’t appreciate it, then maybe you should take them to the soup kitchen for a few days and let them bask in the glory of serving others and getting nothing in return. Not even a thank-you, sometimes.

Let’s give this season, but not out of the LAST MINUTE BUYS! bin. Let’s give a little something of our heart, of our time. Let’s appreciate what we get. And let’s remember that this is a really, really fun time of year for the kids. It’s hard to imagine, but they really do not care if they get a mountain of hundreds of dollars of presents. What about some concrete and a bucket of water? Hours of fun. Or wood and a hammer and nails? (Okay, I might be talking older kids, here.)  Really–they don’t need another DS and a million games. They’re happy kids. And you can be too.

So hey! Stuck in mall traffic?! Turn up the radio and car-party!Don’t forget: this is the most wonderful time of the year.

running, flat out, hair streaming behind

Have fun! It’s only once a year! Act now! Limited time offer!
